Best one of these was on British radio a few months ago (Radio 4 today prog) Jim Naughtie tried to refer to Jeremy Hunt the Culture Secretary - but got it wrong! (And, yes, folks, that really is the presenter's name!)

I must say that when I attended my mother's funeral at a kingdom hall the folk were very kind and friendly. I wasn't sure what sort of reaction I would get because I was a former special pioneer and ministry school servant. Since being disfellowshipped I had become a methodist minister and had published a book about the JWs. So how would they react? they were very good indeed and the elder who officiated at the service was genuinely friendly and courteous. I have no cause for complaint whatever.

Someone has a list of scholars who believe in Jesus as a real person in history?
by TJ Curioso inwhen we say that most scholars believe in jesus as a real person, ask for real credentials.
who are these?.
someone has a list of those?.

I am not aware of any serious biblical scholars who do not believe that there was a real historical person about whom the stories are told. There is wide variation in what is believed about the extent to which the stories reflect the historical Jesus. For a Jewish perspective on Rabbi Jesus I would recommend Hyam Maccoby's book, Jesus the Pharisee, which does a splendid job of relating Jesus to the Rabbis ofhis day. Another writer who is definitely worth reading is Leon Zitzer. Zitzer is not a member of the academic establishment - and hisfrustration and anger with biblical scholars shows throughout his work (self-published) His book, True Jew, is a must-read. My own view is that Zitzer probably gets pretty close to what actually happened.
A word of caution, though - if you read either of these writers be prepared to drastically change your mind about what you believe!

Yes, still in print. At the risk of self advertising (I got a mod's warning for mentioning it once before) it's rather pricey because it's published as an academic book but if anyone wants a copy PM me for a reasonable deal. Or, of course, borrow from the library!

Hi, Slimboyfat - glad you enjoyed my book. I'm still writing, but strictly fiction only now.

Rutherford managed a pretty thorough reinvention of the Watchtower movement. Being a rather disagreeable character he alienated most of those who remained loyal to Russell's ideas. And those who persevered under Rutherford were mostly disillusioned by the fiasco of 1925. That left him free to build a new movement which he distanced from both mainstream christianity and the continuing Bible Students.

Imagine if all religions and sects practised this crazy proxy baptism for the dead: Monthly meetings in heaven when all the "saints in light" are summoned and told that as from this afternoon we'll be welcoming the following new saints. But unfortunately a lot of you will be receiving notice to quit, so will the following please pack your bags.

No, Muslim women are not allowed to have passport photos with faces covered. Same regulations for all and if anyone is unwilling to supply a photograph meeting the requirements, they will not get a passport.

Something interesting
by d ini was looking into two bibles by the jw's.
one was written in 1909 which was called the the holy bible american standard version.
the other obviously the new world translation.
-
Rob Crompton
The American Standard Version was not a Watch Tower version. It was the work of an American team of translators working very much in cooperation with the British translators of the Revised Version. It was the favoured versoin of the JWs because, unlike just about any other version, it rendered the tetragrammaton 'Jehovah'' throughout the Old Testament. It fell out of favour when the WT produced their own New World Translation.

Your recommendation for an economical, wireless home printer?
by juni init would be used primarily for text printing at home.
also, what are your thoughts on the advantages of laser vs. inkjet?
thank you for your help.. juni .
-
Rob Crompton
Don't know about wireless but I definitely recommend laser because it is very much cheaper to run than inkjet. If it's only mono that you need, a laser printer is not at all expensive to buy. And the colour printers are now fairly inexpensive. Colour inkjet just eats up cash.
